  • Rectangular/Square Pools: Measure the length, width, and average depth.
  • Circular Pools: Measure the diameter and average depth.
  • Oval Pools: Measure the longest diameter (length), the shortest diameter (width), and the average depth.
  • Irregular Shapes: Break down the pool into smaller, manageable shapes, measure each section, and calculate the volume for each before adding them up.

2. Calculate Volume

  • Rectangular/Square Pools: Volume (cubic feet) = Length (ft) × Width (ft) × Average Depth (ft)
  • Circular Pools: Volume (cubic feet) = π × (Radius (ft))² × Average Depth (ft), where Radius = Diameter / 2
  • Oval Pools: Volume (cubic feet) = Length (ft) × Width (ft) × Average Depth (ft) × 0.785

3. Convert Volume to Gallons

  • 1 cubic foot of water = 7.48 gallons
  • Convert the volume you calculated in cubic feet to gallons by multiplying by 7.48.

4. Account for Pool Shape and Features

  • Irregular Shapes: Add up the volumes of individual sections.
  • Features: Adjust for steps, benches, and other features by subtracting their estimated volumes from the total.

5. Adjust for Water Level

  • Ensure you measure the actual water depth, not just the pool’s maximum depth, as water level may be lower due to evaporation or intentional underfilling.

  • Volume (cubic feet) = 30 × 15 × 5 = 2250 cubic feet
  • Volume (gallons) = 2250 × 7.48 = 16,830 gallons

Circular Pool (24 ft diameter, 4 ft average depth)

  • Radius = 24 / 2 = 12 ft
  • Volume (cubic feet) = π × 12² × 4 ≈ 1,809.56 cubic feet
  • Volume (gallons) = 1,809.56 × 7.48 ≈ 13,536.75 gallons

Oval Pool (30 ft x 15 ft x 4 ft average depth)

  • Volume (cubic feet) = 30 × 15 × 4 × 0.785 = 1,413 cubic feet
